How to improve your home security

Change the Locks

  • When moving into a new home be sure to change all the locks as you can never be certain who had access to the property before.

  • If you have lost a key, you are advised to change the lock for maximum home security.

Install an Alarm System

  • Alarm systems are known as the best form of home security.

  • An alarm immediately informs emergency authorities and warns homeowners of any potential dangers.

  • An alarm will also act as a deterrent for any potential intruders.

Give the Appearance That Your House is occupied

  • Professional burglars are constantly on the lookout for home owners who are away from their home for a period of time. Make it seem that your home is occupied at all times. A way to do this is by having automatic timers that will turn on lights while you are away.

Don’t Leave Your Key in the Mailbox

  • This is a security tip that everyone has heard of and yet still ignores it. Do not leave your key in the mailbox or under a door mat. A suggestion would be to wrap your key in tin foil and place it in a place where only you and your family is aware of.

Light up the Entrance to Your Home

  • Lighting acts as a deterrent. A good idea is an infrared detector automatically turns on when there is movement in a certain area.

Install Deadbolt Locks

  • Such locks are a lot stronger and provide significantly more protection.

Use Metal Bars on Sliding Doors

  • The metal bar will help prevent the burglar from forcing the door or window open.

Use Interior Door Hinges

  • For optimal home security, reset the hinges so that they are on the inside of the house. This way the burglar cannot remove the hinge pin to gain entry.

  • Protect these areas with window locks and/or burglar-resistant glass. Installing many small panes of glass instead of one large pain of glass is a good option as well. Window entry is highly vulnerable.
